Museum Manager, Carpet Museum Trust
UK, England, Kidderminster
full-time, permanent, up to £25,000 (depending on experience)
This is an exciting opportunity to manage the new Museum of Carpet, a £2.9 million project that focuses on the history of carpets and carpet-making and their strong links with the town of Kidderminster.
Carpets have been manufactured in the town since 1735 and for well over 250 years carpet-making has moulded the character of the Worcestershire town which became the ‘hub’ of a world-wide industry.
The museum is housed in Stour Vale Mill, a carpet factory built in 1855-56. It is a Grade II listed building close to the centre of Kidderminster. Two working power looms will form the centrepiece of the Museum’s displays. Adjoining display galleries will interpret the development of the industry in Kidderminster and show it in its national context. The displays will also emphasise the strong social and community links between the industry and the town, as well as provide opportunities for hands-on learning about of some of the technical aspects of carpet making.
Other facilities will include the Carpet Archives Centre, with its design collection and the associated library, whose development has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, resource/meeting rooms for both family learning and use by formal education groups (which would also be available for hiring out as a meeting venue), a temporary exhibition and activities area, a Tourist Information Point and a shop. The museum is currently in development and is due to open to the public in October 2012.
Besides managing the day-to-day operation of the museum the Manager will also lead the learning programme that will form an important part of the museum’s activities.
This post is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
